Fantastic Quote

I spoke at an ID card event the other day. Dave Birch also spoke and had this fantastic quote on one of his slides. I liked it so much I had to blog about it, even though I don’t really have anything to link it to (other than the crazed attitude of the current government, that is):

They constantly try to escape
From the darkness outside and within
By dreaming of systems so perfect
that no one will need to be good.

T.S. Eliot
The Rock (1934)

  1. Were T.S. Eliot alive today (and still an American, and not such a snob) he would probably have voted for the current government. The “They” referred to in the poem were secular technocratic liberals and socialists.

  2. Correction to my previous comment, it should have said “not still an American” but according to wikipedia, Eliot did become a British citizen so never mind. Still considering the current political scene one imagines that he would have supported Blair for Iraq and the war on terror and probably id cards etc. too if presented as a way to keep down nasty radical types.

  3. If he was alive and still an American he wouldn’t be allowed to vote in a UK election, so the point is moot.
